When you finish with the shopping cart on our web site and click check out you go through a couple of steps and then you come to Paypal. If you are not a Paypal member, You have to join Paypal to continue checking out. There are a few people who do not want to join so I am guessing we are missing their business.

I have tried talking to Paypal and I have not found anyone who seems to know too much about it. But today, they told me to avoid joining paypal, you have to use their shopping cart. I thought we already were. If we are not, and we want to, the explanation they gave me made no sense. They were talking as if we had to list every item we were selling on Paypal and give it a put in cart or some such button.

Any help would be appreciated.

Go to your PayPal account at PayPal.com and click on Profile, then click on Website Payment Preferences. You will find the options listed here that you will need to select in order for your customers to skip joining PayPal.

I did that and customers still have to join. Some are phoning in orders to keep from doing so. I don't know how many are just dropping the order. Any other thoughts?

Which PayPal account do you have?

If you have standard or above then you can process credit/debit card payments from customers who are not paypal members. Admittedly the screen may be confusing because on the right hand side is the log in screen. On the Left hand side there is a link to pay with card.

How do I tell which one i have standard or other. Would any of this matter if I am using oscommerce checkout or Paypal checkout?

You should be able to accept credit/debit cards if you have a PayPal business account. Does your account have a business name in the PayPal profile?

Some people like to have their customers remain in OS cart when the payment is being processed behind the scene by PayPal as they believe it is more professional. To do this you would need to make your cart secure using SSL. You need to change the code or install contributions to make this work properly

Personally, I don't have any problem with a customer clicking checkout and leaving my site to go to pay at paypal in their secure payment pages. I have IPN set up so after payment they return to my cart and the order emails are sent accordingly. I have found that those who have a PayPal account are asked to log in immediately. On that page, on the opposite side is a link for those without an account to pay by credit/debit card. In this case I set up the paypal payment module through the admin panel where the payment effectively gets sent to my email address and have operated as such ever since. I now have web payments pro because I wished to add the facility of paying for items over the telephone using a credit or debit card. I have made no alteration to my module setting.
