sachasal Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Hi all. I have been reading all day with interest and have now felt the need to post! I purchased a turnkey website yesterday whih has oscommerce setup. Now I am not a dummy(thought not) but having tried to follow your kind instructions to simple alterations I am failing miserably. Each time you say catalog first then includes or other categories. Now on my site catalog is just my product list. The only way i seem to be able to go into the options you say is through File manager. Then after that I go into to edit and it is just the box of html with cancel at the bottom. No way to delete or save? I have contacted the seller but am still awaiting a response. I am sure you will all be yawning right now but having been reading all day and not being able to change anything is somewhat frustrating! If I could just possibly change the colour on my header today that would be great!!! See I don't want much! Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to help out such a novice.(A willing and quicklearner though!)[/size]

Rule number three, use a text editor to make your edits. Rule number four, do not use this forum for support for products not obtained via this website.

I am not offended, it is just against the forum rules. And, I did omit to say to always backup your files and database.

Why do you feel the need to be so bloody petty with new forum members ? Sod the bloody rules, at the end of the day are we not here to help one another ?
bickern Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Why do you feel the need to be so bloody petty with new forum members ?Sod the bloody rules, at the end of the day are we not here to help one another ? I have to agree with you there jaybee1960. Sally may have bought a turnkey system, but in a while she may be posting on here helping other members.
Guest Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I do apologise for being "so bloody petty with new forum members". I do consider that to be an insulting comment and have taken deep offence over it. I would expect that when someone gets paid for a product, then they provide the support for that product. I would also expect that posters on the forum abide by the forum rules.

As I have said, yes they are rules, but sometimes, just sometimes we need to ignore those rules and try and help people as much as we can. I very much doubt that young lady will return to the forum after been spoken to the way you did. Just who the hell do you think you are ? I would suggest that you spit your dummy out and either offer help when its asked for, or simply dont use the forum. We are not here to piss people off , We are here to work together as a community and help one another. The girl was off topic but it was her first visit here and we should account for that

If your os site is contained within a folder called shop then you need to replace the word 'catalog' with 'shop' Personally I use Cute HTML and Cute FTP software to perform my editing and uploading tasks. Very rarely, I use the admin file manager but only in a real emergency if I need to change something whilst away from my computer but then you need to back up the edited file using the FTP software when I return home.
shooter-boy Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 If you are offended, get over it. If you aren't going to help, find another thread. If you have no time for newbies, remember that you were once one yourself AND GET OVER IT. Great work umtwebby. Sachasal, you have a PM. Rob Rob Bell - Inspired Graphix Customising osCommerce in Australia, and the world! View my profile for web and email links. I'm sorry, but i cannot offer Free support via PM etc, and osCommerce forums prohibit me from putting any reference to paid support in my signauture. However viewing my profile may provide links to my website or something like that which you may find useful.

burt Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Be aware of the forum rules regarding what can and cannot be discussed. Any commercial products are not to be discussed here - that's black and white. No grey. I don't agree with the rule either, and I suspect that I have had more trouble over that rule than you guys will ever know ;) The original poster has purchased a template, now she needs to be supported by the vendor. That's not difficult to understand, and Coopco said what needed to be said quite succinctly. If the OP has general osCommerce questions use this forum by all means and maybe some of you with 30, 40, 50 posts will help out
burt Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 For the OP; Use FTP to download any file you want to change. Then, when changed, re-upload it. Which file are you attempting to change exactly?

It is clear that she believed "catalog" referred to the area within the admin panel which is clearly wrong. All her mistake was to refer to the purchase of a template initially to incur the wrath of the forum police when she is simply asking for general os advice!
burt Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 And the initial reply from Coopco, gave 4 pieces of succinct advice. Some people (I exclude you Umtwebby) jumped on Coopco as if he had abused the OP -> unacceptable.

It is clear that she believed "catalog" referred to the area within the admin panel which is clearly wrong. All her mistake was to refer to the purchase of a template initially to incur the wrath of the forum police when she is simply asking for general os advice! yes, she did not mention where she had bought anything. I took it, her mention that she bought a template was background information to put her question in perspective. The reason for the continuance on this post is that you can not give short shrift to someone just because they are not using the generic release. It is called community support after all. I am not aiming comments at anyone in particular, i am just mentioning that giving people short shrift in what appears to be a superior manner is not good practice in a community forum. The person replying to a post may not mean it in the context it is taken, which i am sure coopco did not mean to convey, it is just that it did read high handed. The side effect of people seeing a high handed reply is that it makes others reluctant to post, in case they recieve the same response. If the rules state anyone buying a template is banned from posting "carte blanche" then i could understand it. I do understand that templates are often major rewrites and therefore replies to a question may not apply, but that is surely down to the user. I would say the original poster asked a generic question that applied to a normal installation, and in fairness, someone doing a template can hardly be expected to support a full product that it is used on; they will just support the template. I do hold my hand up that i could be wrong and the templates header colour is hardcoded or done differently but the thing that was throwing the op was the term "catalog" and not a colour change. Could i also mention that a lot of tips i have picked up on here was not meant for the original op, someone answered a question and i found the information interesting or applicable to me.
burt Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 I completely agree with you. I suspect that you do not see that your reply and others in this thread are as bad (if not worse) than Coopco' reply to the OP. Coopco answered the OP question, then pointed out a forum rule - he did not say "you bought a template, f--- off".

However, the rule that should be applied is not what the comments intended but how they were perceived. Clearly sachasal thought she had caused offence and apologised. This is because of the manner in which she was responded to. I agree with the sentiments by Coopco but the manner in which they were delivered are open to interpretation. Perhaps a learning curve for everybody!! It would appear that a new member, namely sachasal, may have left the forum because of the way she has been dealt with as she has not responded.
Guest Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 My 2p worth... As a newbie I have asked several questions and have either had 'read the generic help section' or absolutely nothing. I did start using storesprit and found the community very helpful even when asking dumb php questions but it couldn't do what I wanted it to do. oscommerce can do everything that I want but getting any help on php code seems impossible. I have got a php reference manual but as is the case when trying to learn something new, the starting point is so advanced that it is hard to get anywhere in a short time. Please be as helpful as possible to newbies as someone has already said you were all there at some point. PS if anyone can help with my issues then I would be forever greatful ;)
