Search Engine Tips

Just thought I'd share this bit of information with everyone.

I have been speaking to a company that specialises in search engine placement and they have advised me that the OSC files should be on the root of the site. They said that most search engines will search on the root and not go any deeper into the site, therefore if possible, anyone that develops an OSC site should seriously consider moving their files off the catalog directory.

I have just done it and will report back on any success.

If anyone else can provide more tips, we could all do with a helping hand.

Search engines follow links. If the link points to /some/very/deep/nested/directory/file.php it shouldn't be any problem for 99% of them as far as I know... but I could be wrong.

HI there,

I was just wandering if it was better having the catalog in the root directory and, I probabily will put it there. However in my old site, when I uploaded it to some search engine, and I tried to search the name, it show the content of the forum which was

root/forums/index.php

I never post the forum to any search enginge..

The only reason it is better to have the files in the root dir is it looks better. Your URL's are shorter... that's all. I can not think of any technical reason why it would be better then having it in /your/nice/nested/directory/ (or /catalog/ for that matter)

But then again someone else might...

If you do not want your forum to be indexed use the robots.txt file to prevent it getting listed.

by the way Mattice, You said to put the robots.txt if one doesn't what to have the forum indexed. Can you tell me what should it be in that file and should be placed in the forum directory?

Thanks
