Deactivated Products Displaying

I am having a problem with deactivated products displaying. I don't know if I'm allowed to make links in this forum, the site is "n h q e . c o m/catalog/" -- no spaces, obviously.

 

I think I know the *possible* source of the problem, but I don't know the modification name, I should have kept a change log.

 

The administrator of the site added several new items but deactivated them until she could get the images for them. They do not show up in their category pages, which is correct, but they are showing up on the front page of the site.

 

As I write this message I suspect she is adding the images, since she now has them. However, that doesn't resolve the ultimate source of the problem.

 

I'm thinking that the source of the problem is maybe the modification added to make the new items display in rows of 3 on the index page. But at the same time, the "What's New" image is broken, too, so maybe that isn't the source.

 

My assumption is that there should be some code in the index.php file (or whatever file creates the table) that says, "Before displaying this item, check to see if it is inactive."

 

Which is great... and if I had more than 9 weeks of PHP experience, I might be able to fix it. But I don't, so I'm hoping some kind person will have some clue for me so that I can prevent this problem in the future.
