how does php determine http & https pages / content

Been reading with interest the comments about setting up for ssl. All seems to make sense about editing the configure.php files (which is done for you if you select ssl during setup).

However, have the following problems:

 

I get no ssl / https unless I enter ssl lines in the apache2/sites enabled file - but this then converts the whole site to https

If i remove the generic statements above I get errors on any pages that require ssl. I cannot see how the systems as a whole differentiates the http from the https.

 

I have the site in the /var/www directory

 

Any ideas??
