Sitemap XML generator

I went to Sitemap Generator to create a sitemap.xml. In past it generally consisted of something like 300 urls. The last two I had generated to bring it up to date is something I do not understand. So am asking for some thoughts on why it like it is. Some of the url appear as

<loc>http://brs-giftshop.com/about_us.php</loc>

and in the same report it shows same url with id attachec to address as like this:

<loc>http://brs-giftshop.com/about_us.php?osCsid=3ce692ebe9fa62f112ea5cbbfcdbc467</loc>

In all searching of sample sitemap xml I have seen, never have i seen them with and without the oscsid attached. When at my web site, one does not get the id tag till one isin the secured area.

So am I just edit all of the id urls from sitemap.xml then upload the file?

Thanks.

You should install the google sitemap by Chemo located in the contributions section. it will generate the sitemaps correctly and allow a cron job to be set up so they are kept up to date.

Not to sound dumb or nothing, Or maybe I misunderstood. I do have his contribution installed and which google is aware of the where abouts of the two files. But I thought I also needed to have a generated google.xml in the root directory also.

So I will rename the file to sitemap.xml.bak till I get some verification on this.

If you have it installed, then go to http://yoursite.com/googlesitemap/index.php and it will provide you with the sitemaps you need to submit to google. You don't need any others.

I received a 404 error when I typed http://brs-gftshop.com/googlesitemap/index.php, so I changed it to googleSitemapProducts and Categories.

It did produce a product and categories sitemap. Do I combine the two into one with a file as sitemap.xml then submit the location to google or is is it done like the sample found at goolgle/webmasters

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">

<sitemap>

<loc>http://brs-giftshop.com/sitemap1.xml</loc>

<lastmod>2008-03-24T23:23:17+00:00</lastmod>

</sitemap>

<sitemap>

<loc>http://brs-giftshop.com/sitemap2.xml</loc>

<lastmod>2008-03-24</lastmod>

</sitemap>

</sitemapindex>

If this is right, my dir for these files will like thiis:

http://mysite.com/sitemap.xml

http://mysite.com/sitemap1.xml

http://mysite.com/sitemap2.xml

So if the case, isn't sitemap1.xml and sitemap2.xml the wrong format for the file name according to google?

I did go ahead and tried to get google to verify my links. I did resubmit my site and the results is wonderful. Sitemap.xlm has been verified by google.

I did receive a ok grade with 497 urls found. So it looks like I am back in the saddle again. (that's just an old saying - meaning all is fine again.)

Thanks.

I have used Sitemap Generator so far but now I am over the 500 free limit. I would pay the $20 if I felt confident enough that I could install it on my server, so I am looking for a free alternative to keep my Google Sitemap up-to-date.

You should install the google sitemap by Chemo located in the contributions section. it will generate the sitemaps correctly and allow a cron job to be set up so they are kept up to date.

Which one exactly? There are 3 mentioning Chemo. I have installed http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/5539 but dont have a file/folder googlesitemaps/index.php.

Instead I have "googleSitemapCategories.php" and "googleSitemapProducts.php". Both only supply 5 links!! That can't be right!

Would should I do?

Thank you for the link Jack!

I am still a little confused though. This script seems to generate several sitemaps. One of products, one for categories, etc. I was under the impression that you only generate 1 file called sitemap.xml and then put that in the root directory.

Should I now submitt all sitemaps to google? Won't they overlap or miss out any links?

I think theres much I need to learn!
