Httpd makes my uploaded images inaccessible

When images are uploaded for products or categories, they reside as httpd owner on the server and I cannot access them, very difficult to back everything up properly. Anyone else had this problem?

I'm told the only way to be able to access these is login as httpd or root, and I don't have root.
