adding product options

I have many products, all with different attributes - colour, size, etc. The colours all have reference numbers (which are different for each product) which I really do need to include.

 

Does anyone know of a shortcut of adding these?

 

I have dipped my toe into php and mysql (before finding osc) and think that it may be fairly easy to write a simple php script that would directly add each product into the database and bypass the admin system. Ideally I want to make a form that includes fields for product name, image(s), price, attributes etc, all in one go.

 

I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who has done this or anyone who knows slightly more about this than I do (which wouldn't be difficult).
