New Products / limit the rotation of Random products on homepage

Hi

 

I have random products but how do i rotate only the latest say 40 new products so they rotate randomly. is this possible.

 

we're updating our pictures but only the newest pictures are updated.

 

if anyone knows how to rotate and how to limit newer items that would be great
