Cannot get California state tax to be applied

I've been banging my head against this one all weekend. I can't get California state sales tax to be applied for CA state customers. I've done searches on the forums here, of course, and have used the tips there to set up the tax zone and other settings in the Admin interface, but I can't get the tax calculated during order checkout. (It stays at 0.00.) I'm using a snapshot from the end of last month (29th, I believe).

I did some poking around in the database, and I noticed that the entry_state field in the address_book table is blank for all customers. Might this be the problem? And if so, does anyone have any tips as to how I might solve it? (For what it's worth, it appears that the states are recorded and stored successfully in the relevant Customer, Billing, and Delivery address fields in the orders table.)

Any suggestions would be deeply, deeply appreciated.

In the Tax Zones where you see California with a folder next to it ... click on the folder ... there are some settings underneath that need to be set too ...

And missing state fields would make it harder for the tax to apply as well.

Hi Linda. I knew I was missing something. I never noticed the folder, nor the fact that I had to click on it. Of course, the settings within were set to the default of Florida, which I quickly changed to California. I'll test it again in a moment, and hopefully that alone will do the trick. Thanks so much for pointing this out!

Regarding the address_book table, I assume that nobody else out there has the state information in the entry_state field as blank for all customers, correct? Do you have any idea why the entry_state field would blank for all customers?

Once again, profuse thanks for all of your help!

Frankly neither did I ... the first zillion times I fooled with Tax ... like who knew?

Of course, now that I think about it ... it's a folder ... we should think, hey what's in the folder ... let's explore it and find out! :oha:

Oh as to the field for the state being blank ... good question ...

What snapshot are you on and did you add in any add-ons? I am thinking somewhere something is turned off or not configured, or you have a mis-matched field selection in there.

I'd find it a bit easier to peek at your site ... and see how it takes a login, an order, etc.

I'm using Ian's Nov 2002 (v4) loaded snapshot, which I believe is based on a November 29 standard OSC snapshot with many contributions added (including a few of yours! ;) ).

The site in question follows below. I look forward to your thoughts! :D

I cannot get your site to load.

Is it a new one that might not yet be fully populated on all the routers?

What peices I do get to load, if anything, are only parts like something is missing.

A friend of mine got the same thing, even though I'm told that the site loads fine for the majority of people. As you suggested, the DNS switch was flipped on Tuesday, so the new DNS information may not have fully propagated yet.

Perhaps you can try it via the IP address, although you'll probably get an SSL alert during checkout:

Please let me know how that works! :D

Not well ...

When I get to a break point I will reset my DSL connection and see if that fixes the issue. Sometimes it helps on new sites if I do this ... :D

Sounds good. Is there anything I can do on my end to alleviate this? Obviously I'm not too thrilled about the prospect of potential customers coming to the site only to see a 1/4 loaded page. :(

Read a good book?

Afraid not ... the DNS has to go from the registra based on your settings to your domain ... to the major routers guys ... to the thing-a-magig on the ISP hosting ... and then has to basically catch up with itself.

In technical terms ... you wait until blue about 24-168 hours depending on all the peices parts in between.

Don't you love it when I get technical?

I actually know what I am saying ... but the correct terminology escapes me at the moment. But you get the idea I think.
