Backing up and boxes, too

Hi! I'm brand new! And I accidentally posted this in the wrong section earlier (tips and tricks) Sorry!!! So, I'll try again here ....

I've looked around the forums a lot. I've found great info for beginners, but haven't quite found these answers...

Before I start trying various changes, I want to make sure I can restore everything.

Can someone tell me how to back up---do I merely use the backup in the admin/tools section? Or back up to my external hd?

Also, I'd like my opening page have a large main photo with categories above horizontally---is that a matter of deleting original boxes and adding new ones? Or is there a contribution for those things.

Thanks! I can't wait to dive in and see if I can get this done!

Welcome to the Forums, Shari!

You can backup your database with the admin/tools, but you should back up all your files in the "catalog" directory before making changes such as an addon or a major layout change.

Yes, you would need to change the html part of the mainpage to affect the layout. If you are familiar with HTML you just need to concentrate on the table layout (ie. td and tr tags).

The infoboxes can be placed inside of any layout you want.

Ok--this is really basic and I'm embarrassed to ask, but....so, do I back the catalog directory to my hard drive? And....really bad...where is the catalog directory? And where are the html files? Thanks again...s

To backup files you should be using an FTP program like Filezilla to download files from your server to your local computer. You can also use this program to load modified or new files. The Catalog directory is referred to as the directory where you have all of your stores files loaded.
