Database changes

Hi

I have set up a new site, which I want to use instead of my existing one. I have a few questions which I am unsure about & would appreciate some "speak clearly english" help on please! ;)

As my existing site has additional files I do not just want to upload the new site onto, as I assume the extra files will remain & undoubtably confuse me later!

What would happen if I deleted all the folders & files in the root & then upload my new folders & files?

I also need to take all the relevant database folders which relate to the customers details, ie history, address, orders etc & the points & rewards & move from the old to the new database. Have I forgotten any others that I may need from my previous database?

I can backup my database through mypanel & save on my computer but that is as far as I have ever been.

Suggested order & advise would be greatly appreciated please. :D

Thanks

Julie

Hi Geoffrey

Thanks but I already know how to amend the configure file & even how to move a whole site.

What is dangerous is that I am assumming I can "at a quiet time" delete all my live files & upload my new files, with the changed configure files, & it will not break anything. I have never had "no" files/folders in the root. If that is how a completely new site can be placed in the same root possision as the existing live site, then that's ok. :)

I now should have the new site (live) & pointing to the new database.

I now need to take some of the old data & transfer it to the new database, so my customers will see the same details as before ie (again I'm guessing) address_book, customers, customers_basket, customers_basket_attributes, customers_info, customers_points_pending, orders, orders_products,orders_status, orders_status_history, orders_totals,

Will this lot cover the customers addresses, orders, history & points?

I've had a look around, but can see export, or sql & browse etc & do not know how to take just the relevant parts from the backup old live database & put into the new should then be live database?

Am I making sence or confused? >_<

Thanks

Hi

How can I tell which tables I need to move over please?

I have been selecting each table & browsing it, but for example the orders table references the product_id. As the products in the new site are all placed differently will this break, or will it have the details already stored as to which product that was when it was bought?

Any advice please, as I need to move the new site over. If I have to start again & not move any customers over then I hope they are understanding!! :-"

Thanks

Hi again

I have been browsing the database & google :P

I have these tables downloaded:

address_book.sql

customers.sql

customers_points_pending.sql

orders_status_history.sql

orders_total.sql

product_notifications.sql

But I am unsure if these are needed too:

customers_basket

customers_info

orders_products

I should then be able to use the SQL tab & browse button to upload these .sql tables into the new database...I assume!

Thanks

Julie
