Worst Opensource Support I've ever experienced

Wow, I have posted 2 threads over the last day, and I have not had one response. I use several other open source products and get help from either the community or the open source team very frequently, but if I post something in here, the only thing I have ever gotten are some badge happy forum cop who was adamant about me making sure I didn't ost a signature, but yet, no help when it comes to the software. For how big this software's name is, I was shocked to discover how little help is provided. Anyways, just voicing my frustrations =)

However maybe your points weren't clear enough and really you should give at least 24 hours before mouthing off.

 

If you point me in the direction of your threads i'll see if i can offer any advice.

Ok, maybe I did get impatient and a little frustrated. I had spent so many hours trying to install this shopping cart, and then when you start to think everything has been done in vain and you're going to have to either reinstall or choose a different solution, it's frustrating. . . not that I'm the only who's ever had to go through that. I found out I wasn't probably getting any answers because I posted in the wrong thread. Howevr, to prove a point, nobody offered to comment or reply to any of my threads until I made a statement regarding the slow responses to my issues. At the same time, I'm probably 100% sure I didn't post my question accurately, as I really don't know what is wrong. So I'll start over. . . one step at a time.

 

My first issue is an installation issue I'm pretty sure. So this should be the correct thread. I've noticed from my website, tbflashlights.com that the center red buttons that point to account.php (My Account), checkout_process.php (Check Out), and checkout_shipping.php (Shipping & Returns) don't ever come up. I checked, and the files are installed, however, the pages just never seem to appear.

 

If anyone has time to help with this, it would be much appreciated ;) And I was under the assumption that my download came with the platinum level of tech support =)

To confirm you have the following three files uploaded at the root of your server ie:

 

catalog/

 

checkout_shipping.php

checkout_process.php

login.php

what red buttons? Sounds like you have a template installed?

I do have those 3 files installed, however, they are installed at just / - As I don't have them installed in a seperate directory, I have it installed at the root level of the domain. And Yes, I am using a template, however, I'm not using a monster template.

Support is offered here for core osCommerce and for contributions in their respective threads.

 

Your problem is related to an externally supplied template. I suggest you contact them about it.

I have, the main canned response is 'Upgrade to a purchased version or signup for paid support'.

 

Not to bash creloaded, but it seems like everyone over there is out to make a few dollars on the hard work of others.

Just my two cents worth.

 

osCommerce is my first experience with open source software. All my database design work has been with purchased database design software. On their messageboard, there are people whose first thought is that if they can't do on day one what they want to do, it is obviously the fault of the software. There are bugs in the software, it doesn't work properly (whatever that means). It doesn't run under whatever OS they have on their system. Never a thought that a) they posted to the wrong forum; B) they didn't specify the problem in enough detail ('This product doesn't work!!' lacks some specificity); c) why doesn't this product work like product X does?, on and on.

 

I have to say that osCommerce is an outstanding product and this messageboard and the knowledgeable and committed user are superb. I have gotten answers to my questions - most of the time. Sometimes I have to rephrase my question or post to another thread.

 

I still do not have my client's store up and running, but I'm getting closer. A LOT of where I am is owed, in no small part to the osCommerce community. I know html, but php could just as well be Greek to me, but I'm making some progress. I'll get it and the store will role roll out, hopefully sooner than later. It won't be the most fantastic store ever seen, but it will do the job my client wants and (hopefully) it will generate income for the.

 

I think I'll just shut up and finish by saying that for a no-cost product, I've never seen anything that comes close to equaling osCommerce. On top of that, you can add all of the contributions and no-cost help!! Wow.

I haven't needed to ask for a lot of help (yet) - I've just been reading threads posted by others facing similar problems that have been answered in depth and used my own initiative (albeit entirely html based). Web designing is secondary to my actual work (in IT) so it doesn't always come easily to me either and I'm by no means proficient!

 

There are relatively few posts regarding oscommerce integration into an existing site built in frames - it's taken me two weeks to get to here (most of which was spent trying to get my head around php/sql databases) and I'm waiting on the payment processor account details atm

 

This is the site with buttons linking to the oscommerce catalog server-side (I'm running the upgraded site locally as the original is a live mail order business and has to remain online whilst I convert it into an online shop).

 

 

And this is the shopping_cart.php page loading seamlessly into the existing html frames - to say I am impressed with what this software is capable of would be an understatement!

 

 

I don't know of any commercial ecommerce applications that would be this versatile...
