calculating product weight

Just a quick question about entering product weights for determining shipping rates. Let's say a product weighs 1.9 ounces. Do you divide that by 16 and thus, the product weight becomes 0.118? Or a product weighs 1 lb 6 ounces. Does this now become 1.375? If this is correct, does this calculation hold true for the way most shopping carts want the weights figured and added to the system?

I went to http://www.bagatrix.com/conversions.htm it's a online weight conversion table. It worked for me.
