Default Currency

I have just installed osCommerce and i'm trying to learn it as i go along with no previous experience, i have no items to sell as yet so i am working with the Demo Items, In the admin section i select Localizations / Currencies. Here i added GBP for Great British Pounds, Selected £ as the Symbol Left, Decimal Point . Thousands Point , Decimal Places 2 Value: 1.00000000 I then set GBP as default then clicked Update Currencies and everything seemed to work ok. Now when i load up my shop Everything listed is in $ instead of my default £ and to change this i need to go bottom right of the shop and change Currencies, What am i doing wrong ?
