Guest Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 I have a two part question. First - I am about to purchase an SSL certificate for the domain name. My current host says that to have an https: I am going to be charged an additional 45 plus 25 per month. An acquaintance (usually take their opinions with a grain of salt) says that as long as the SSL certificate is in order I can deliver through a regularly hosted site. Since this forum contains the a lot of experience in the arena of e-commerce, I know I will get the correct answer. Can an SSL certificate be placed on a normal host? The second question is this! Since I have already started building the site on OSCommerce and my intention is to add an SSL certificate, what do I do POST initial installation? Where do I record all of the SSL certificate information if the site is already up and running? Thanks for your help and guidance.
Jack_mcs Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 The $45 is a reasonable fee but the $25/month is rediculous. You have to pay a montly fee on most hosts for a dedicated IP needed for the cert but a typical charge is under $5 (we only charge $1). I don't know what you mean by "normal host." I don't know what you mean by "what do I do POST initial installation." If you asking how you setup the shop to work with an ssl cert, you just change the includes/configure.php file to use it. The cert has to be installed properly on the server though. For the aobve price, your host should do that for you while smiling and whistling the whole time. :) Jack Support Links: For Hire: Contact me for anything you need help with for your shop: upgrading, hosting, repairs, code written, etc. All of My Addons Get the latest versions of my addons Recommended SEO Addons
Guest Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 So all it is would be a dedicated IP address. I guess my host is smiling. Okay...I will be moving this one over to my other host. Understand on the includes/configure.php file Thanks for your help. Dylan
Jack_mcs Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 You do have to pay for the cert too. It is cheaper if you purchase it yourself but that procedure can be difficult for someone not having done it before. Plus, some host won't allow you to install it yourself or purcahse it from anyone but them. None of that is usually a problem as long as the price is reasonable though.
