Site Down

In the past hour my site has gone down and when you try to access the site you get this message:-

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /home/yxgblfan/public_html/catalog/includes/functions/database.php on line 19

Unable to connect to database server!

. I have done no work no file changes and certainly no database work. Yet again one hour the site was working the next hour it was not and was showing this message. I have emailed my hosts but do not understand what else I can do.

I am getting quite concerned over all these error messages that appear out of the blue when no files have been changed or altered in anyway by myself, who is the only person working on this site. I am wondering if hacking is causing me problems or what.

Appreciate anybodys input on this problem need to get back on line asap

Urgent help please

It's usually a hosting problem - you've done right to contact your host as first port of call.

Assuing we are looking at your "N N B" domain, I'd suggest that the server you have this hosted on is packed with lots of sites. At least 877 on the Name Servers (though that doesn't mean there are 877 other sites on the server!).

Suggest it could be beneficial to hunt for a new host (I don't have any recommendations!).

Thanks for your speedy response.

I only moved to Vodahost in October 2007 on recommendation of others. So am not keen to move again. But these inexplicable errors that keep occuring out of the blue in this past couple of weeks are very upsetting mentally and to the business. I have already received emails saying how can I order I cannot get on the site. This only works for those who know my personal email as the site being down has also taken out my [email protected] and [email protected] emails and these are the emails most customers know.

Wouldn't these problems only serve to re-inforce that you should get your site onto a host that can really handle it? I don't think that I would be happy with ANY downtime (caused by host problems) on a live e-commerce site. Every minute that a live site is down, it is potentially losing customers.

It might be a bit of hard work in the short term to move a website, but in the long term it'll probably cost you a lot less than being out of action and losing sales.
