drakonan
Thanks everyone for willing to read this post. I need to salvage my inventory and product attrib information on the sinking ship of my shopping cart... (I need to update to a newer snapshot -post nov.- and I know cvs update is what you do, but I set my cvsroot variable to the wrong CVS folder, and well... my shopping cart has sunk (www.cookssaw.com/shop) Anyway, the easiest way is to jump on board a paddle boat and aquire a new ship... If you could tell me what I need to save (where mysql inventory database is etc. and the product attrib stuff...) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for your time Please save me, Shipwrecked at sea - - - - Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
Guest
As long as your update did not change your database, your inventory, customers list etc is all safe.

drakonan
See, I didn't install osCommerce (Some script provided by my host did) so I don't even know the simple stuff like where my database is etc. What files (in what probable locations) should I save and then restore? I made a total mess, but the update only "appends" to modified data.... So my inventory is still there etc, but where on the host is it probably? Please start out with simple, like the database is called oscommerce.dbf or something and its located in your mysql folder.... (This is completely made up, just an example) Thanks Kim, I didn't word my question clearly. Oh yeah, about the backup. You are right. I'm going to start doing that BEFORE the crash... It's weird though... No one buys an alarm system for their house until they get robbed.... Thanks again for your guys' time - - - - Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Guest
Brandon, Your host should be able to give you instructions on how to access the dB. You need to know the server, your user name, the password, and the name of the dB. Download a GUI like phpMyAdmin and you can check your tables, upload to them and download from them with it. Do you have any idea which version your host is using? You might want to consider downloading the current snapshot.
drakonan
That's exactly what I want to do Kim. I use Windows, and phpmyadmin is a unix program, right? Is there some win2k alternative? The host's script installs an initial 2.2 release, but I need a "post nov. 6th" release for certain contributions. I have remote shell access (via SSH) that's where I found the power to mess everything up when I tried to "cvs update" admin with the cvsroot variable set to ../CVS, thereby using the wrong CVS folder, I assume... I don't know much about this stuff.... I'm just a win2k network admin... Do I have to ask the host for the database info? Here's some questions: Will the database be inside the "shop" folder (where oscommerce is installed) or outside it? If it's outside it, can I just remove (rename) the shop and reinstall? Will it keep and use the old database, or overwrite? What do you think the script would do? Maybe it'd try to overwrite also... It was live, but no one knew it so the only customer was me. So, I only care about the inventory and product attribute stuff... I've also got all of my custom gifs saved so I don't need any of that either... That's why I was so bold about doing the cvs update... I even would re-input all the inventory but I spent alot of time on product attributes.... See, I'm thinking it'd be easiest for the script to install the old 2.2 and I cvs update correctly this time (BTW, does anyone have any info on how to do it the right way, so I don't mess up again?) Maybe it would be easier to do the current snapshot from scratch without my host's script too. Is it possible on a remote connection? What all rights/access methods do I need to do it with? I don't want to contact my host because the main guy was skeptical about giving me shell access, because I'd mess something up (and I did). He can't know that unless he HAS to :). Thanks again. My replies are becoming books. Thanks for spending the time to read them. - - - - Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
Guest
phpmyadmin is a unix program, You are going to upload phpmyadmin to your web site. It is a web based interface for the dB. Do I have to ask the host for the database info? Since you have shell access, you should have the information that you need to access the dB. I like the easy stuff ...I use the phpMyAdmin instead of shell access. Will the database be inside the "shop" folder (where oscommerce is installed) or outside it? If it's outside it, can I just remove (rename) the shop and reinstall? Will it keep and use the old database, or overwrite? What do you think the script would do? Maybe it'd try to overwrite also... The dB is outside of the shop folder . Yes, you can just remove the mess and reinstall. The database HAS changed with the new check out (post 11-1-02) but, you don't want to over-write it. Down load the manual at http://www.oscdox.com The install procedure is all in there.
drakonan
Ok, I'm going to attempt to use my host's script to reinstall osCommerce. It shouldn't ruin the current mysql database file. IF it does then I'll just redo it all... The script is so much easier than manually installing, and I'll try to upgrade from there... By the way, how do I know how old the snapshot is of my oscommerce install? (If they install a post-nov release, I'll be happy) - - - - Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
