Large Databases...

Ello.... Slowly slowly my sites been growing in products im upto near 6000 and by time i will have finished im hoping to triple this. I noticed that the site has been getting slightly slower to load (not by much)... but enough to make me think that 6000 more products later this could be a weeeeeeee issue. When i make a product atm through the osc admin panel, it automatically loads the picture into the images section all in the main folder... So im guessing that all these are then being uploaded into one giant field in the mysql DB. How would i go about making different catagories upload their pictures to a different sub-field within the DB and making it query only the appropiate sub field as to having it search through 1000's of values. Is this possible and would it make much of a difference??? or is it just the overall size of the DB that determines loading time.

Oh and out of interest does any one know where i can find a site that just has the basic osc stock loaded to it??? I thought it would be easy to find but it has foxed me today and its probly right under my nose!!!

Thanks for any help

Regards

The images get uploaded into the images directory, not the database. The slowness for large databases is usually because of the categories box, assuming you have a large number of them. Try removing the cateogires box just see if the site loads faster. Whether it does or not, there are ways to optimize the site to speed it up. One of the best is to install an auto thumbnail contribution so the size of the page being loaded is reduced by a large amount. By the way, any site with more than a handful of products really should be using the Easy Populate contribution to add products. It will save you a lot of time handling the products.

Yes, that is the one. Just remove it for a quick test and compare how the page loads. If it is the cause, you will need to find a different way to handle the categories, or suffer the loss of speed.
