themilkman Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Hi - I was just wondering if someone was to learn osCommerce inside out, how it is built and the folder structure and then went to work for a company - would they find this same structure? In other words is the way osCommerce is strutured also adopted by professional companies when it copmes to them developing e-commerce solutions from scratch? Whats the point of a signature?
Jack_mcs Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Any large company will generally have in-house programers that create their own shop or pay to have one created. But oscommerce uses php and mysql so becoming fluent in those will help no matter what you ended up working on. The queation you pose leads to a negative response. No one is paid. OSC offers a flexible solution, professional carts do not.
themilkman Posted February 11, 2008 Author Posted February 11, 2008 Coopco, I was not looking for a negative response. What I am actually looking for is that if someone new started learning by using osCommerce would they see the same thing in industry or would the php + mysql of an e-commerce site be totally different and therefore learning osCommerce would be of no benefit? Whats the point of a signature?
krnl Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 To expand upon the response provided by Jack_mcs... If you get into the guts of OSCommerce, you would end up having to learn PHP and MySQL, which are two good things to learn about, regardless of the actual shopping cart software. If you can take good PHP and MySQL knowledge to a company, it would be worth a lot more than just saying "I'm fluent in running the OSCommerce shopping cart".

I would say that by playing with and editing osCommerce (learning PHP/MySQL) you would learn loads that would benefit you in employment. I personally found this with YABBSE/SMF then osCommerce "amongst many others. The teams that build worldwide renowned opensource software tend all to have a great way of achieving "certain ends" and it's valuable in itself to experience the differences in approach. Learning osCommerce however is not a recognised degree/qualification so .. no .. you would not receive immediate "employability" by learning it. Hope I didn't deviate too far from your point. What I am actually looking for is that if someone new started learning by using osCommerce would they see the same thing in industry or would the php + mysql of an e-commerce site be totally different and therefore learning osCommerce would be of no benefit? For one, there will always be a benifit to learning any code. Depending how much you desire, with osCommerce you can learn much about PHP, SQL, Javascript, HTML, CSS and even XML. But it depends a lot more than just working on osCommerce alone. Books are very valuable, if read. No two software sources are alike. They may be simular, like CRELOADED and ZENCART and OSMAX are all related becuase they are all based on osCommerce, but each cart is its own monster with peices of unique code that contol its behavior. You cant jump from learning osCommerce alone and then go write your own cart right away. But you can learn from osCommerce enough to know the basics of the code languages used to write it, and you can take that knowledge and apply it as far as you are willing to take it. The code languages used in osCommerce all function the same no matter what they are written for, but its the way they are written that differs. (hard to explain, hope someone knows what the hell I be talking about here). These languages are very powerfull and as far as Ive seen, are unlimited in what they can do together in the right environment. As far as telling a prospective employer you know osCommerce inside out, to get a job? Well that more than likely wouldnt mean $h*t to them. But if you really know it inside out, you would know far more than just osCommerce. So yes. And as a shopping cart, I believe if put in the right hands, it is the most valuable, powerful and professional solution avialable today. bickern Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 But if you can tell them you can write php, and use mysql and possibly configure apache web servers then you are well on the way to being an employable web developer. To a large extent companies and people use various software packages. If you take an accounts package for instance, they all do a similar thing but you navigate round them differently and the layout is different; also some have more options than others. it is the same with a cart. But if you learn about accounts and nominal ledgers etc, it will not take you long to get used to a different accounts package. So my answer is, learn how this cart works and you will have a small learning curve if you then work for a company that uses a different package.
