Second OsCommerce catalog on the same webspace?

I have just installed and set up my first online shop - and boy am i proud of myself!! B)

Prob doesnt look much to most - but as my first attempt - i'm happy with it (www.wwgiftware.co.uk)

My friend has set up his own business but has no website. I would like to make a smaller version of my shop for him (as he wouldn't offer the full range) and brand the site to look like his own.

Is it possible to install and set-up another oscommerce catalog on the same webspace or will he have to buy some space? (i.e. would it cause a conflict / errors, etc?) It would make it easier if i could put it on the same space - would be easier to manage.

Thanks in advance

It depends on your host and the paln you have. Many will allow you to "add-on" a domain. It is a simple matter to setup but host-dependant so you need to talk to them about it.

thanks for your speedy reply,

is there any way that i could install another catalogue within a sub-directory (i.e. my domain/royalwelsh) and then get the new domain name to point to it at a later date?

Sorry if this sounds rediculous - i'm a real beginner!!

Yes, you can install it into a sub-directory and access it like http://yoursite.com/sub_directory_name/. When you are ready to have it online, you add the domain as an add-on and then you will be able to access it directly with http://yoursecondsite.com.

Any ideas how to install it?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but i've tried a few times with no result. I've created a new database, uploaded the files into the folder mysite.co.uk/newfolder but then when i try typing "mysite.co.uk/newfolder/install" into my browser it tells me that file can't be found - even though i can see it via ftp!!

Would i have to manually install a second, or do i have to create other files / folders within the 'newfolder' in order for it to work?

Again, i'm sorry about my total lack of knowledge - very steep learning curve for me - even though i am proud of what i'm learning on a daily basis (especially with helpful people like youself! )

Use subdomains as jack said plus apply multistore if You want to manage thru one admin.

The installation script should work with a sub-directory. But you can just copy the files from the existing shop and then edit the includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php files to have it look at the new shop and database.

I am trying to do very much the same. I want to set up a seperate webstore for different zones.

www.mysite.com/uk

www.mysite.com/us

How do you go about setting up Multistore. Is it an add-on?

Thanks.

PS: Thanks to Jack for the pointing me in the right direction.

I have now installed a brand new osc in a subdirectory the store seems to be showing just fine, but I can't access the Admin for my new store.

Oringinal Store: www.mysite.com/

New Store: www.mysite.com/ukandireland/

I install the new one completely from scratch with no links to the original store.

If anyone knows how I can copy the products I have listed in my original store to my new store please let me know...

Or is it possible to just copy a file with the listings in it, if so, which files?

Thanks a mil. :)

Ok, now I have major problems...

I went back to my original osc and found that all my products have been replaced by the new osc.

It's kinda a pain because now I have to take my webstore off line. (not happy at all!)

I tried to delete the new ocs with my ftp program but now all the dectories are loked and I cant delete it.

It's too late now but you need to create a second database for the second shop. Ask your host if they can restore your database. If not, and if you don't have a copy, then the data is lost.

going back to my original start post for this topic:

i have been trying to create a second store/catalogue (with a seperate database) on my webspace. Going back to basics, (as i'm failing miserably) can someone please tell me how to do it steps - i've created a new database.

Where do i upload the catalogue folder to? My current store is directly within my main folder - as i wanted my domain name to take customers direct to the store at www.wwgiftware.co.uk. and not have to click through a welcome page.

I then wanted a second store called 'Royal Welsh' to be accessed via www.wwgiftware.co.uk/royalwelsh.

If i upload the contents of the catalogue into a folder called /royalwelsh, when i try to access it to install it my internet viewer is telling me that the page it not available. This is probably something really stupid that i'm doing or not doing - as you can prob tell my experience is very limited.

thanks in anticipation

Do you use an FTP program?

You can access the /royalwelsh folder using an ftp program or if your CPanel on you Host has a file manager you can access it that way also. If you using the webinstall for the new osc then either way will do but if your going to be downloading the osc to you hardrive and unzipping it local then I would recomend using ftp to upload it from there. You can get ftp from www.ipswitch.com (wsftp). Its a 30 day trial, and there are no limits on it.

Just make sure you tell the osc to look to the new database. Unlike what I did and lost all my products. he he, silly me!
