hi guys, i just was wondering what are the different versions of oscommerce i.e: creLoaded, oscmax, oscommerce...??

and what are the differences between them??

Thank you in advance,

:)

I think they are all based on the same thing OSCommerce, it seems the basis to them all, but OSCMax comes with alot of the contribs people usually download n want preinstalled and CRE Loaded is packed with pretty much everything you could want and looks better in the admin end.

Wikipedia usually has good anwsers for general knowledge questions.

They're oscommerce shops with some contributions already installed. The main difference though is that they use the basic template system contribution which alters the basic oscommerce code. The end result of using such a shop is that most people find the contributions they chose for you are not ones you want or don't include others you do want. The problem you then find is that the existing contributions usually won't work with a BTS shop since the code has been altered. So, initially, such a shop may save you time and trouble but later on, you will pay for that several times over.

thanks for the replies guys :D

well i've spent the last 2 days solid looking into templates, contributions and community support on all 3 versions. (literally lol stopped to eat and sleep... )

I personally conclude that as much as cre loaded looks ok in basics, your right they have little help, templates and free contributions so i ruled them out. plus they seem money hungry to me <_<

oscmax has mostly what i want in the basics but templates are VERY far and few between, plus the community seems a little small and it seems only in its developmental stages to me. >_<

so i'm sticking with oscommerce as i have found a few forums with large communities (so if one forum cant help there are other options rather then the limitations.)

my only worry is i heard alot that oscommerce will move into the same template system as the others within the next 2 versions... which worries me due to future contribution compatibility.

sorry leslie like i said it was reoccuring snippets from numerous sources... i'm not really sure why thats an issue... just discussing it ... obviously i'm not trying to bag out oscommerce just thought i'd ask since i remember seeing it on a couple of occasions on the MANY sites i've been looking over the last couple of days... i only remembered the points when i started typing this thread... so i thought to mention it hear and start a lil discussion to see if there was any truth.. only to try and wrok my template out for bts and secure my store if there was a problem maybe i could find a contribution to fix it...

plus i just found this thread on this forum... security problem i presume...

Use the latest osCommerce version available from the downloads section. It has so far no security issues.

The link you just gave above is a security issue related to a contribution and not to the osCommerce shop itself.

OsCommerce v2.2 is still being developed and supported and are not template based.

The new and upcomming version 3 is totaly different and none of the contributions for 2.2 will work directly with it and yes it is template based, but dont hold your breath waiting for it..it may still be quite some time till a production version is released.

Your best bet is to use the latest osCommerce V2.2 available from this site.

I just want to know if it is BTS or not. No offence taken or given.

>_<

sorry leslie i got my wires crossed there..

so it will be a different build... but if its a far way off i guess not worth bothering to worry about it now like you said... (i got a lil jittery as i'm still learning it all and didnt want to start all over again in the very near future - if it turned out it was coming soon i'd stop now and work with the new version)

ok guys... thanks for your replies :) i'll go beck to fluffing my store now :P

If you look at the code for OSC 3, it is using a template system that is clearly based on BTS. Although the actual code is not the same. It does look to be cleaner than BTS and maybe once the contributions get converted it won't be so bad.
