Can downloads work if you accept check/money order?

I've done quite a bit of searching here on the forum to try to find the answer to this. I've come across a few people asking the same question, but they have no replies. Other related threads were several years old. Anyway, I have a client who offers a CD version and downloadable version of his album on their osc site. Right now they only accept paypal and all works fine. They want to start accepting checks for the CD version. However when I enable the check/money order payment module, then people can select that payment method for the downloadable product and obviously grab it for free. I know there are several contributions that handle downloadable configurations, but I'm not sure if they are still necessary as many of them were written when OSC was a lot older. So my question is, is there some way to handle this currently within OSC or do I still need to use an addon contribution?
