Changing Categories

Recommended Posts

If you reorder your products and categories, as long as you keep the same products ID's, they will still be at the same product-level URL, i.e. yoursite.com/product_info.php?products_id=234

However, your category product links will be different when viewed from within the category i.e. if indexed by google as yoursite.com/index.php?cPath=34&products_id=234 and you change the category that the product is in, it will have to be re-indexed under the new category, maybe yoursite.com/index.php?cPath=28&products_id=234.

You can change category names without affecting SEO. But if you delete your categories and make new ones, your categories will also change which cPath variable they use, so that would change the category URLs.

I hope that makes sense.

So if I did change the cpath - the previous page would throw up a 404?

If you visit a category that doesn't exist in the database, it will give you a page that says "There are no products in this category"

Try visiting yoursite.com/index.php?cPath=999
