roamer38
I run a MIVA store (set-up by someone else) and thought I would try osCommerce for a parallel site as I was looking for something I could set-up and manage myself. I thought it would be "fun". Downloaded and installed osc and then started to play with it. The first thing I noticed when adding a product is there is no provision for a proper thumbnail; it just compresses the main image and it looks like crap. With all the whistles and bells the program has built into it, and there's nothing to generate a decent thumbnail??? You've got to be kidding. So I spent way to much time researching the best module to make up for this shortcoming, and then realize I don't have the experience with code to even figure out how to install the module, or where. Not to mention the fact that alot of the modules seem to have bugs. I was under the impression that osc was a little more user friendly for newbies and that knowledge of code and programming wasn't required. I don't want to dis the program as it is free and lots of people are obviously in love with it. But I'm afraid I simply don't have the experience or time to fix some of the basic shortcomings of the program. Did anyone else feel the same way when they started with osCommerce? Guest
The contributions offered here are from people who has took the time to create them, with most things there are bugs, which is why most contributions get updated to iron them all out. Most of the contributions also come with step by step instructions to install them and the knowledge of programming isn't needed. Some do require it but you just put them to the side or pay for someone to install it. I agree there isn't many for thumbnails and the ones there are, they are not the easiest but hey, pay someone £15-£20 to install it, you've got the main shopping cart with loads of features for free ;) If you go under configuration and then click on images you can reset the thumbnail sizes, its best to delete the height and set the width, this way it will calculate the hight for each individual image and they will not become pixelated.
