Hi guys,

whats your opinions on hosing your own OSC site on a 1meg adsl connection? or would we have to use a dedicated data line 1meg up an 1 meg down at the moment the upload is only 256 but we hope to increase that to 836 ?

Any comments would be appreciated

First, make sure your internet provider will let you, you will be using a great deal of internet from them. Second, make sure its secure. Third set it up get it going, go to your local library or someones house and try getting to it at different times during the day, whatever the peak time are. If everything seems to run nice and smooth, and pretty fast than I would think thats all you need. Also depends on what type of site your building, I would think. The more java and flash you have the faster your gona want to have it get to your customer. Most people are switching to DSL over 56k, but a great many people still use 56k. I would almost say yes, you want it a little faster than you have stated for those who do have DSL or a T1. If its a cost issue, like I said, test it out first at another location away from yours, and see how long it takes to load. I don't think you would need a dedicated data line, unless your service provider says no, then catchas ya doing it. The could cut you off without warning if its in your contract with them, thats if they catch you though.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply, I have tested it away from home and it seems fairly quick, I'm not doing anything with flash and keeping it very clean and basic, with the standard OSC template. This is because customers that use it won't be members of the public usually companies that want to purchase additional equipment.

It the moment we are using a 512/256 ADSL line at a 50:1 connection ratio, I was thinking of switching to BT which offer an unlimited connection with 8meg down and 836 up, along with a service guarantee and 20:1 connection ratio, which seems cost effective. Next step up is a 1 meg data line but thats just 1meg up and 1 meg down. As it's a business hosting package I can't see them having an issue with us hosting our own site.
