permissions for catalog/tmp directory

in the config I've got my working temp directory set to:

Working Directory

/home/mywebsite/public_html/catalog/tmp/

 

I've been struggling for hours in a sea of unclear and confusing advice to set up encrypted payments using the option when ssl is not available. I've created my own certs etc (and I intend to post the idiots guide to doing this here soon because the opensll documentation is about as easy as navigating through a mudbath with a candle)

 

However my latest prob is the permissions for the tmp directory - I got masses of errors when moving from checkout_payment to confirmation . . . until I set this dir to 774 when they magically disappeared. Is that correct or is it better to use a dir not shared by the cache and with its own permissions?
