Categories listing on first page

My shop is at

it works very well and I thank the developers of oscommerce very much for that awesome tool!

 

Now a question: I would like to display the shop's categories on the first page, in a tabular format (not a listing) with the categories image. The table would have 3 or 4 columns and contain direct image links to the categories and the name of the category (and of course also pass the session ID along).

 

Is there a way to do this? Thanks for pasting your code in here.
