How to make shipping visible in cart before checkout?

I would like the shipping charge to show up on the shopping_cart.php page. Is there a way to add a zip code box to that page so that the appropriate shipping may be added before checkout is initiated?

Have you looked at Estimated shipping costs module? You can rename it to Shipping Costs and it will tell the customer the postage options they have and the costs, it adds a link to the shopping cart page.
