Remove categories listing on index

I recently made a change to application_top that enabled my navigation tree on the main page to always be expanded. The fix was to find $cpath'' in application_top and enter the cpath id number for your categories. That works great, when I ggo to my domain the nav tree is expanded by default. Problem is the main body of the index page no longer shows the default welcome guest and login if already... text message. Now, instead there is just a list of all the categories that are in the expanded nav tree. How can I keep it expanded like I have it but get rid of that columned list of categories and add what I want there instead? Thanks in advance.
