I am trying to integrate the CONSTANT CONTACT contribution, and i have the full instructions and I have a great idea about how to do this, but someone told me that I have to change the FILE PERMISSION.. This is their exact post from Coopco:

CHMOD is just changing the file permissions.

If you do not want a file to be changed on your pc, you would make it read only by changing the properties of the file.

In linux, the options are more varied.

Recommended permissions are

644 for files

755 for directories

You can set these permissions via your file manager in your web hosts control panel. If you use filezilla, you see the same thing.

644 equals

user: RW

group: R

other: R

755 equals

user: RWX

group: RX

other: RX

If you have ever used hostmonster, please help me. I see at the top of the file manager there is a button that says CHANGE PERMISSIONS but it is not clickable, its just grey.. All i did was create a new folder called MAILDUMPS like it said, and then i wanted to try to change the permissions to the way that the person above suggested but its not working..

can someone tell me where i went wrong? Did i create the folder the wrong way? Is there a setting i am missing??

I am going to TRY to get an answer on the hostmonster web forum, but you folks seem to be better at answering questions..

THANKS

The better place to ask this question is definitely your hosting provider's forums. Is it possible that you created the folder via FTP and then tried to change the permissions with a web based file manager or vice versa? As I'm not your provider and can't see the ownership of your files/folders you HAVE TO ask YOUR HOSTING PROVIDER.

Ok, i got it.. I did change the permissions but now - ofcoarse, i'm having a whole new world of issues.. I found out (for those of you who want to know)

That the 0777 is the php code for the actual 777 the zero is there when you speak of code, but the only real options to change are USER GROUP WORLD

Thanks for trying to answer though.. its just that there is no fourth variable.. the 0 is more of a place holder i assume for coding reasons.

Not using hostmaster.

My file manager gives 2 ways of changing permissions.

To use chmod at the top of the page, a file or directory must be selected (checkbox at the right).

If I just click on a file, the info at the right changes to allow me to change permissions.

Why would it matter ho the file was created, unless you are using site builder.

well, i honestly would not KNOW why it would make a difference in how the file was created, but i was just thinking it could be a possibility.. but it wasnt...

The problem was that i selected the file in the left column in the browser, and tried to change it, but not on the main part of the file manager in the center of the page.. When i finally realized that i wasn;t looking at the "EDITABLE" file, i clicked the file in the main manager and there was no problem changing permissions.
