IslandTradingCo Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 HI - I am a newbie who is quite computer literate, but new to e-commerce. I have been doing what I consider to be "due diligence" in reviewing hosting providers and *free* shopping cart options. I have almost locked in my decision to use osCommerce. After starting with 10-12 and then narrowing it down to 4-5 hosting providers, I was ready to pull the trigger with "1and1." I came here to the osCommerce forums to confirm compatibilty and see what experienced users might have to say about the combination. I am surprised to read about what seems to me to be a lot of negative comments or usability errors. THE REASON I AM REALLY SURPRISED is that osCommerce is one of *only 2* shopping carts even mentioned on "1and1's" FAQs. I *assumed* [re-stress that word] that was a good thing; i.e. they "formally" acknowledge osCommerce. So I guess this is not a question, per se, but any additional insight would be appreciated. Looking forward to getting my stores up and running - DAN

You can search the forums here to find those posts but I would suggest not to bother with them since you have not signed up yet and find a host that actually supports the package. Jack Actually, I host at 1and1 and everything went smoothly. You have to configure your configure.php to point to the database, but not a big deal. Sure you would have to do that with any hosting.

Been hosting at 1and1 for 6 years with only one or two minor issues (no-one is perfect!) and have had osC hosted with them for over a year. I don't think they set it up for you (never asked) but it's no big deal. Getting everything to work the way you want it to is a bigger deal - but only you know what contribs you want to use or what customising you want to do. They also have PHP4 & 5 set up, so you have either option. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Porpoises are most happy when wet! \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _ \ _

My biggest complaint would be their lack of a gui for setting up a CRON job..."Putty" is a pain! "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."
