configuration Problems

I get this error on step 4.

I'm sorry, but this is my "me too". This is my first attempt to install OSCommerce. I followed the .../install/ screens and wound up with the same error as Dan. I read the "HowTo" (the name of which i can not now see because i'm editing here) and tried setting all files from "catalog" down to 777. That didn't change the error. I tried to put some comments, via "echo", into the database.php file, but apparently i don't know all the calls because my lines wouldn't parse. :(
