Mark product out of stock will not allow anything but numbers

I'm in the Admin configurations section of OS Commerce. Under the configurations menu I have the stock section of the store configurations.

 

The options are currently set as follows:

 

Check Stock Level: True

Subtract Stock: True

Allow Checkout: 0

Mark Product out of stock: 0

Stock Reorder level: 5

 

When I try to change the "Mark Product out of stock" to say "Out of Stock" it simply returns a 0. Before it had the default ***

 

Now it won't even let me put the *** back in. It will allow numbers but nothing else.

 

Please either point me in the direction of where I can change this directly in the database (I can't find the table in the database where this value is stored) or help me understand why it won't allow me to change it to something other then a number.

I located the table in the database where I could change the value directly. It is in the configurations table of course. However, I would still like to know why it wouldn't let me change it via the admin interface.
