Help - the ipn never works i have to manually change order status

I have a website using OSC. I use paypal ipn module.

 

I should mention that i have not set up any security (ssl) or anything on my server. And i didnt make any changes to the default installation of paypal ipn in oscommerce (just added the paypal email address in the setting in admin).

 

The ipns always fail - the orders go to the paypal account but i have to manually change the order status in admin.

 

Paypal write to me and say as my ipns always fail - they will disable ipns from my paypal account.

 

What does this mean? Does this mean that i wont be able to use osc with my pp account?

 

I didnt set up any secure server stuff and dont understand about certificates and ssl.

 

Why doest the ipn work?

 

At the moment the customers are still paying in paypal but when i go to admin customers orders they are all sticking on preparing paypal ipn. Someone mentioned something called open ssl, or do i need to buy a security certificate from my web host?

 

I really dont understand the SSL / Security. To be honest i dont want to use SSL on my site, i am satisfied my customers enter their credit card info onto paypal and the rest of the information is sent insecurely. However I do need to this IPN thing to work or paypal are threatening to disable it from my account.
