Customers logged out when clicking on checkout

Customers are being logged out when clicking on checkout. This is a new problem as up until recently there have been no problems and as far as I am aware, nothing has changed. I can see my host has bounced the MySQL database, but I think this is a controlled bounce.

 

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I need to get this fixed pretty quickly as we're coming up to Christmas. Any help will be gladly appreciated.

From what I've found doing searches, this probably has something to do with sessions. Prob from a php upgrade on the host. What do I need to change my end?

 

I use Protx Form, so not my own SSL. Is this classed as a shared SSL?
