How to get rid of menu Sub-categories?

Forgive me my frustration, but I am starting to find customisation of osCommerce rather complicated. Not only it is extremly difficult to find stuff wich is being called from somewhere which is being called from somewhere else, but it also goes against all W3C standards.Not even text can be found and changed easily. Wrong nesting, unclosed tags and so on. It is a mirracle browsers can render it at all. Isn't there something like fully customisable plain PHP version without any formatting or at least without tables and images?

 

Having said that, I still have a lot of respect for the people who spend their time creating this free sopping cart solution.

 

Now to my question. Does anyone know how to get rid of sub-categories being displayed in the left hand side menu when you click on a main category? Example: I click "Hardware" and under it a new list of categories shows up. Who needs that when the sub-categories are also displayed in the main window?
