Customise Main / Home page / index.php

Hi there,

 

I have no experience in php but am a capable search and replacer. I have a shop that is only selling a handful of products (under 20 at the moment). My client has 2-3 products that he wants to feature on the home page when people arrive at the site.

 

I have already been under-the-hood and made multiple customisations so far and have looked through various contributions and through the forums, I'm sure that it must be relatively simple as I am sure that many people customise the products on their home page.

 

Could someone with a good sense of the options available tell me the easiest way to do this. I am assuming that it works by assigning some sort of unique 'category' to the products then applying a call to display that particular 'category' on the home page. I just don't know the easiest way to do this.
