rollovers on category page

I'm creating an online clothes store and we have two main categories: Men's and Women's. Beneath these we have a number of different categories (Tees, Shirts, Pants, etc.) and I'd like to create some rollover images for the page where these category images are displayed (which appears to be somewhere in index.php.) Does anyone know how to do this and how I go about removing text links on this page, also?

This sounds similar to what I want to do. Where new items are displayed on the home page, I want instead, four large images that are navigation buttons or image maps or rollovers which, when clicked take you to a category of merchandise. Here's an example of what I'd like.
