lighten background on front page & link pics to store items

Hi

two questions:

First i would like to lighten the background on the front page from grey

2nd i would like to link three pictures to sections in my shop. Could you let me know how to

1) change background colour on the front page and

2 how to link the pictures to parts of my store?
