I am looking to set up an ecommerce site for one of my customers, but I need to know:

 

1. Is it possible to use mod rewrite to shorten the dynamic URLs?

2. Are templates fully customisable (and even better) can I create my own skin for the site?

 

Any advice, links etc would be gratefully received.

1, Yes with a bit of work.

2, Yes with either very little or tons of work, depending on how much you want to develop it.

1 -There are contributions, pre-written code changes, that will allow rewriting the url. Your host has to have that option enabled though.

 

2 - You can change the look of the shop in a number of ways - using pre-made templates, installing one of the template contributions or by hand. The degree of difficulty usually follows that same path. The last requires a fair bit of knowledge about the shop so you wouldn't, most likely, be able to use that method right away.
