hammed Posted November 3, 2007 Author Posted November 3, 2007 Ask them for the passwords. We tried that, but they won't give them to us.
Jack_mcs Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 There's probably not alot to be done. You can check the TOS and, if they are in violation, contact your credit card company and request a chargeback. But once you do, they may close your account which would close down your shop. Do you have any access at all? If you have access to your admin section, then you may be able to get what you need from there. The same with ftp'ing. Guest Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 We tried that, but they won't give them to us. It is your shop and they have been paid, so they are not entitled to do that. Have you gotten legal advice?

Jack I have a username and password to the whole backend administration...but not ftp...not code...not banner management...etc.... I need to make changes and fix stuff, but don't have the access to do that as I understand it. They just keep sending bills for ridiculous stuff and I'm done paying for it. My site does very well, but now that I won't pay for everything, it's falling apart at the seems.....

Avec Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 You don't mention the relationship between the people doing the work and the host. If they are separate, contact your host and explain what is going on. Who pays for the hosting, you or them? Are you under some type of contract with the techs? If so, you must honor that, however, you only must honor it financially. As long as you pay them, they have no claim. If you have no contract and owe them no money, and if you pay for the domain, and it is in your name, inform them that they have 3 days to provide the information or you will seek legal counsel.
♥Vger Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 If you have access to the osCommerce admin panel then you can download a backup of the database from there, and take copies of all files. As long as you control the domain you can then take it somewhere else, upload the copied files and database backup and you'll have complete control of everything. However, it sounds as if what you bought is a "hosted solution" in which case they would be legally entitled to keep control of everything. Vger
qwan Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Who are these techs. I suggest if you mentioned their names and put their "blackmailing" all over the internet on review sites, yahoo answers and report it to BBB they will definately buckle and give you your site back. On the other hand if you say you have "backend access" i assume it is the oscommerce back end. If that is the case then you can get a back of the sql and then........hmmm there is still the major problem that they can put your website offline anytime. i suggest only a legal solutions and "exposing" these people on the net. Like mention the company name and the names of the techs that you are dealing with. and report it to all review sites and search their company name and they will definately buckle. If they are hosting websites then use a reverse dns and find all the website they are hosting and email all those webmaster the problem your a facing and warn them about this company.

Vger Maybe I'm not getting this correct, but why can't you just contact your ISP, explain the situation and have them change your passwords? HtH [email protected]
digilee Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Before you do anything you should check your contract with them. You did get a contract? Right? SolarFrenzy Solar powered gadgets at down to earth prices. CheekyNaughty Promoting British Design
Guest Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Maybe I'm not getting this correct, but why can't you just contact your ISP, explain the situation and have them change your passwords? HtH [email protected] The ISP may not be the webhost.
Guest Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 The ISP may not be the webhost. As stated above... the main question here is; Is your webdesign team ALSO your hosting company? If the answer to this question is "YES", then it culd make life hard work, see below. If the answer is "no", you should simply contact your hosting company directly and explain the situation. they should be able to change all the relevant passwords for you. If the answer is "yes", your into a minefield. You should first check your contract, they may be breaking it...but probably not. If they are breaking their contract I would advise them of this, and tell them you will seek legal advise. Your final option, which might be quite controversial would be to use the credit card charge-back against the web designers. Simply advise them that you wish to take your website to another company, and ask them for a costing to either put your files onto disc, or provide you with admin ftp access. Once you have moved your site away from this very unscrupulous company, just do a chargeback on your credit card for whatever they charged you to "get out". Keep us posted.
