It is best to have your keywords in your domain but they have to be keywords that people search for. Take our site for example, we used to be www.javaroasters.com which is our company name but the only people (person) who searched for "java roasters" was my Mom which does not do much to help our business. People do search for "java" but are usually looking for the computer java and not coffee java.

So we searched for about 3 months and found www.beancoffeeshop.com As you can imagine a lot more people search for "coffee", "bean coffee" and "coffee shop". Those are now the keywords we focus on for out site and traffic is much better.

Hey Laurence,

It's not really about domain names that cause a high rank with the search engines (not saying it doesn't hurt).

Search engines gather their information a few ways.

  • META tags
  • Page links
  • Text on the actual page (HTML page for example)

Let's take for example your search for airsoft.

The first site to show in the airsoft search was http://www.airsoft.org/

  • Look at the META tags content (names) that people can type into the search engine box <META NAME="keywords" content="airsoft, airsoft mini, mini electric, softair mini, AirSoft mini guns, airsoft rifles, airsoft electric, air soft, MP5, Steyr, G3A3, M16,A AK47, XM177"> airsoft is mentioned six times.
  • Take a look at the menu on the left, again airsoft many times
  • Look at how many times airsoft is used on the opening page

A good point of reference to learn more about how search engines work, read up here - https://www.google.com/support/webmasters/?hl=en

i activated the SEO friendly urls on the admin section (standerd ones) but can any one recoment a package to enable to to make them so its more search engine friendly apart from just showing the OSCOM standerd ones?
