How does the Downloads section work?

Hi All

 

I'm a newbie at this although I have dabbled in the past I'm not great.

I dont seem to be able to get the downloads module to work??

 

My whole shop is based on downloads but it doesnt seem to work properly?

 

I have set up the product for download and you can log in and pay but the customer doesnt recieve an email with the link to the download?

Also the download via redirect confuses me?

How does this work?

Does it rename the download file and place it in a temp dir then send a link to this ??

 

Please help me
