Ian Lawther Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I have been running an OsCommerce store for 18 months and have been "hosting" it as a subdomain of my main website. My initial reasoning for this was that I had had the original site for some years and as the hosting company rewarded long term clients with more bandwidth and discount offers it seemed to make sense as I had space to spare (and I'm cheap  ). At the time I started someone (here I think) suggested that being on a subdomain made things harder for search engines and so I am wondering about migrating the store to its own domain (that name currently redirects to the subdomain). So my questions here are:- 1) How difficult is it to move an OsCommerce store from a subdomain to a domain. 2) how true is it that subdomains are harder on search engines (ie am I doing this based on a false premise). Thanks, Ian Lawther

Hi Ian, IMHO 1. Migrating is easy. 2. False - Search engines do not give rating based on domain or subdomain. One of my pages has a higher page rank then the index page (index page is more keyword rich, and SEO optimized, but stand-alone page has more backlinks). Backlinks, age of domain, sitemap, keyword density etc contribute for search engines, a subdomain, really doesn't matter. HTH Thanks Gaurav Best Regards,Gaurav
