Manufacturer' Options

I'm setting up my ocCommerce to sell various items. For most of them instead of "manufacturer" I changed it to "record label" to match the music products, but for this doesn't match other items for sale. I would like to know if I can include a $variable somewhere in the product information which determines whether or not "record label" (manufacturer) is shown on the site. Would this require editing the database or admin side of osCommerce? I really hope there is some simple code I can play with, and if anyone knows where I can find that, great! Give me a copy-paste solution, better!!!
