New install of OS Commerce

Recommended Posts

I am currently attempting to add the OS commerce shopping cart to my already existing site. I use IXWeb Hosting as my host and i was in the middle of a configuration screen, where it asked me to enter an email address for extra orders. After i did that i received a message saying "Unable to Connect to server". I am not even sure if i am doing the setup in the correct order. Does anyone have any link to directions on this from start to finish?

Thanks,

The shop I installed was on IXWeb Hosting as well.

I had some PDF's that were in the ZIP files with directions.

I followed them, and had no problems...

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.

Did you already have a web site set up when you installed this shopping cart?

How flexible is the cart when it comes to putting OSCommerce items where you want to put it on an already existing site?

Do you still happen to have access to that PDF that you followed?

Your guidance here is sincerely appreciated.

It was a new site, so I didn't integrate it into an existing one.

As a matter of fact, yes.

:)

I am on the OSCommerce site at:

http://www.oscommerce.info/docs/english/ta...f_contents.html

I think that ot looks like with IX web hosting, they have already done the install part on that link. Where would i need to start to continue the setup? Does this sound familiar to you?

Thanks,

cw

That depends.

When you type in your website URL into your browser, does a "default" install of osCommerce appear, or are you not at that stage yet?

Try going to:

http://www.YOUR_URL/index.php

or

http://www.YOUR_URL/catalog/

(some people install it to /store, so if you did that you'd need to change /catalog/ to /store/ in the above example)

Just replace YOUR_URL with your website address.

Does the osC page appear?

Yes, the osC page appears...looks like this:

What's New Here?

Welcome Guest! Would you like to log yourself in? Or would you prefer to create an account?

This is a default setup of the osCommerce project, products shown are for demonstrational purposes, any products purchased will not be delivered nor will the customer be billed. Any information seen on these products is to be treated as fictional.

Error Messages

If there are any error or warning messages shown above, please correct them first before proceeding.

Error messages are displayed at the very top of the page with a complete background color.

What should i do from here?

Good job!

;)

If no messages appear in red at the top of the default page, you're ready to start customizing or getting your catalog setup.

Personally, I'd get the catalog setup first, then tackle the shop appearance - but it's just my preference.

If there are error messages in red at the top, post them and I'll help you fix them if you want.

Thank you for this.

So help me understand something. I already have a website setup. So are you saying that i will have to put this link on my site. When user selects this link, will it look like this or can i customize it to look and feel of my site. To get the catalog set up, i am here:

Categories / Products Search:

Go To: TopHardware CDROM Drives Graphics Cards Keyboards Memory Mice Monitors Printers SpeakersSoftware Action Simulation StrategyDVD Movies Action Cartoons Comedy Drama Science Fiction Thriller

Categories / Products Status Action

Hardware

Software

DVD Movies

Categories: 3

Products: 0

Do i just add new products?

Well, you can go either way here.

It's possible to integrate osC into an existing site, or you can rework the osC code to the look and feel you want.

I guess it's the lesser of two evils, as to what you want to do - no "standard answer" applies.

Looks like all the default things are in the catalog.

I added a few items before I deleted the old ones.

One word of caution on deleting the default catalog items...

Delete each product from each category individually first. After all products in a category have been deleted, then you may delete the category.

If you delete a category without deleting the products contained in it first, you may get "ghost" products in your catalog.

Have you "secured" your osC Admin area yet?

I looked at securing the admin area but was not sure how to so i just left it for now. Is that pretty straighforward?

What does the flags mean when adding products. There are three flags, a british, german and something else. I only put names next to the British flag. Does this matter?

Don't worry about the "flags" unless you plan on a "multi lingual" store.

The store I did was English only and it turned out fine and I didn't pay any attention to the flags.

You need to "secure" your Admin area.

Login to your IX Web Host Control Panel, click on Manage, then WebShell3.

At the top of that page click on Protect.

After that, I'm not sure what the exact click route would be as I used FrontPage to upload the site I did and the protection I did was through it.
