How does an SSL certificate look like?

I have never seen one since I always have it set up for me.

 

Is it a file?

 

How does basically the whole philosophy work?

Something very similar to that. It is basically just a text file that contains

encrypted key data. You have one for the server and one for the domain.

Your webserver loads those keys whenever it starts.

 

Idea is the server/browser connection gets encrypted, all data is 'garbage' so noone can read it

(which is bull as anything gets cracked and so did SSL long time ago)

You mean that everytime someone requests a secured domain, the key passes throught the line to the browser?
