I have two website I built using templates...thank goodness. But now that I want to go ecommerce I am in the dark! I just opened my account and downloaded osCommerce 1.2. I have looked through the files and I think I can figure out what's going on if I can get past the basics. I really am reading all the knowlwdge base info. It is complete alien to me!

  • Which step do I do first?
  • How do I back up all the files so I don't screw them up when I work on them? What I am doing isn't working.
  • Why are the osCommerce help manuals completely different than the file I see in my hosting account- there's no "MY STORE" on the version I have!
  • I've read the install upgrade instructions and am still confused. I don't understand.
  • How do you see what the code you enter builds?
  • And how do you post your site?

I have a long way to go, and expect I'll need to buy some of the books recommended. I just thought I'd find easy step by step stuff here!

Let me appologize now for the asking all the same stuff you've probably heard before. I am no dummy with graphics and stuff, so I am really frustrated! :'(

Ok, at first, I don't know if it was a typo, but there is no Version 1.2 of OSCommerce. The most recent version is 2.2 RC1.

After downloading it and extracting the files to your local machine, you need to upload them with an FTP program to your webspace. Note that you need PHP/MySQL running there. Otherwise the shop software is useless for you.

After uploading, run the installation procedure and you should be good to go. The shopwill be up and running then and you'll see a couple of example products there. Follow the installation instructions very carefully and make all the neccessary changes.

1. Make sure that your host provides PHP, MySQL and (to make things easier) phpMyAdmin.

2. Set up a blank database via your web hosting control panel and assign a user name and password to it.

3. If you want to install osCommerce in the root of your domain then upload the contents of the 'catalog' folder, but not the folder itself to the root of your hosting via FTP. If you want the osCommerce site to be in a folder then upload the 'catalog' folder and its contents to the root of your hosting via FTP.

4. Go to either http://www.yourdomain.com/install or http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/install and begin the install procedure.

5. You'll then need to provide the Database Server address, which is usually 'localhost', the name of your database and the User Name and Password for it.

6. DO NOT enable SSL during the install unless you have a full ssl certificate for your website.

That should get you started.

p.s. Ignore the Knowledge Base images of the osCommerce admin panel - they are for osCommerce MS3 which hasn't been released yet.

Hello,

The way I adjust oscommerce to the style I want is through adjusting the php code in the diferent files, e.g. header.php under catalog/includes. When I'm done adjusting the php code to my likings i'll give it a try with an ftp client, i upload the file and take a look at my site if it is what i wanted.

And it is not something that you do in a coppel of days.

Take a look at my site IRoffice, this is something that i made out of scratch with the basic oscommerce template (with no knowledge of php).

But it is fun to do  and if you're stuk ask a lot of questions (specifik) in the forum.

First give it a try, adjusting the php files in the way you want (mostly adding lines), and give it a lot of time.
