I've doubled/copied a category and can't figure out how to delete it

I am making my first attempt to add products since my designer has turned the site over to me. Under "Categories" in my Admin, I only have 1, named the same name as my site, OhCheri. When you look at my homepage, you will see lots of listings under the word "Categories". So I have regular sizes and plus sizes separate. I added the regular size, refreshed my site and it looked great, woohoo! Then I went to add the plus size, and I clicked on Copy...it asked my where to copy to and I said Plus Sizes (it was in a drop-down). Suddenly I have two categories on my homepage called Plus Chemises. I've tried retracing my steps but I can't figure out where to delete it. I found this thread where it says to go to myphpadmin, but I can't make heads or tails of that! Since I made the error while in OSCommerce Admin, shouldn't I be able to fix it from here?

Yes you should, In admin catalog delete/remove what you don't want.

Yeah, if only it were that easy. OK now I've screwed up some more stuff and I want to go back to the beginning. I have a back up file but I don't know what to do with it? How do I upload my back up files? Do I need a software program? I know how to access my site via FTP on Internet Explorer, but I only know how to SEE it, not do anything with it.

Can someone please explain, click by click, how I restore my website with my back up files?

Do not use IE to ftp files. Download filezilla and use it to ftp and change file permissions.

I downloaded Filezilla but I can't tell what it's purpose is? What does "change file permissions" mean? Is this the software I need to upload my back up file to erase the damage I've done to my website? I just want to go back to where I started and try again. I have the back up folder icon on my desktop but I don't know what to do with it.

"I have the back up folder icon", I hope this is more than an icon and it has files that you can restore.

Filezilla needs to be installed on your PC. You can then use it to upload and download files to and from your web site. You can also use it to to change the file permissions (chmod) the files on your website.

You know what FTP means? That's an abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol and means the way to send files over the internet. Filezilla is a program to send files from your computer to another (your webserver in this case) and vice versa. Changing file permissions means that the files located on your webserver has a kind of protection, so that not anybody can do anything to them. I guess you would not like someone else to alter your program files, so the protection is set the way that only you have full access to them. But to run them, means starting the shop in their browser, the user needs the permission to do that. But that's just a very basic explanation. So when someone talks about changing permissions or 'chmod' the changing of those settings is meant.

Filezilla works similar to your Windows Explorer, just that it has two windows, one for your local computer and one for the remote server (your webserver). You can copy the files back and forth and with a rightclick to the remote file you'll see a menu where you can alter the chmod settings for it.

And the use of IE is totally unreliable for the pupose of ftping files.

Thank you for that very detailed explanation. I do have a basic understanding as to what FTP means, and I thought when I downloaded Firezilla that it would do what I need. The folder on my desktop does have all of my files stored inside of it and now I have Firezilla downloaded. But mechanically I don't know know the next step, I just have a Firezilla window staring at me. I wish I knew how to do a screen shot, but these are the words on the screen:

FileZilla Server version 0.9.23 beta

Copyright 2001-2006 by Tim Kosse ([email protected])

Connecting to server...

Connected, waiting for authentication

Logged on

Retrieving settings, please wait...

Done retrieving settings

I know he expects me to do something, and I want to do something, but I have no clue where to start. Do I open my file folder? Do I drag and drop it inside the screen? Do I need to log onto 1&1.com (server host)? I just want to restore my website to where it was when I did the backup.

:'(

Regarding your description, you're already connected to your webserver. Now you have windows titled server view and local view. change the directory of the local view to the folder that contains the backed up files. Then you can change the directory on the server view side to the shop root folder. After that you can drag and drop any file from local to the server just the way the internet explorer works too.
